San Mateo Park is one of the Peninsula's classic early-1900s neighborhoods, tucked between downtown San Mateo, Burlingame and the Hillsborough border. It was planned around 1900 on part of the old Howard family estate, with John McLaren, the landscape designer behind San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, helping lay out its curving streets and plantings. The result still shows: winding roads, landscaped traffic circles, huge heritage trees, and large lots holding everything from grand historic homes to mid-century customs and newer builds.
