Its land was once part of William Davis Merry Howard's 6,000-acre Rancho San Mateo, which was sold off in pieces in the late 1860s and divided again as Hillsborough's original estates broke up; homes went up piecemeal through the 1960s, and some owners are still replacing them with grand new residences.
